Wing foiling is one of the fastest-growing watersports in the world, and choosing the right equipment can make a huge difference to how quickly you progress. While it’s tempting to buy the smallest, highest-performance gear, beginners will learn much faster on equipment that’s designed to be stable, forgiving and easy to use.
In this guide, we’ll explain the best wing foil boards, wings and foils for beginners, along with why buying a complete wing foil package is often the best value.

Choosing the Right Wing Foil Board
The board is one of the most important pieces of equipment when you’re learning. A board with plenty of volume gives you stability while standing, making it much easier to control the wing and get onto the foil.
As a general guide:
- 60–75kg rider: 90–110 litre board
- 75–90kg rider: 110–130 litre board
- 90kg+ rider: 130–150 litre board
Many beginners choose a board around 30–40 litres above their body weight. For example, an 80kg rider will usually find a board between 110 and 120 litres ideal for learning.
Larger boards allow you to stand comfortably before the board begins moving, making water starts significantly easier. As your confidence grows, you’ll eventually move to a smaller board that offers improved manoeuvrability and performance.

What Size Wing Should You Buy?
Wing size depends on your weight and the typical wind conditions where you’ll be riding.
- 4-4.5m Wing – Strong winds (20-30 knots)
- 5-5.5m Wing – The most popular all-round size (15-25 knots)
- 6-6.5m Wing – Lighter winds or heavier riders (10-20 knots)
If you’re only buying one wing to begin with, a 5-5.5m wing is usually the best choice for the majority of riders. But it will depend on where you are learning. If you are on a reservoir where the wind is generally less constant you will need a larger wing then if you’re learning on the sea.
As you progress, you’ll often add smaller or larger wings to cover different wind strengths, but a quality 5-5.5m wing provides an excellent starting point.
When choosing a wing, you’ll notice there are a few different handle options available. Most wings are supplied with either a boom, two rigid (hard) handles, or, on some older models, soft webbing handles.
Soft handles have largely been phased out as the technology has evolved, with most riders now choosing between a boom or rigid handles.
A boom allows you to slide your hands freely along its length, making it easier to find the perfect hand position during tacks, gybes and transitions. There’s no gap between handles, so you’re less likely to miss your grip when moving your hands, which is why many riders find a boom more intuitive and confidence-inspiring.
Rigid handles offer a lightweight, direct feel and are preferred by some riders for their simplicity and reduced overall weight.
At Fluid Lines, we sell predominantly boom-equipped wings because they’re the most popular choice for both beginners and experienced riders, offering greater flexibility and making hand changes smoother and more forgiving.

Choosing the Right Foil
Many new riders assume a smaller foil will be easier to ride, but the opposite is true.
A larger front wing generates lift at lower speeds, allowing you to foil earlier and with greater stability.
For beginners we generally recommend:
- Front wing: 1,600–2,000cm²
- Mast length: 75-85cm
- fuselage: 66-74cm
- Stable, medium to low aspect foil
This combination allows the foil to lift smoothly and predictably, giving you more time to react while learning.
Once you’re comfortably foiling and making turns, you can move onto smaller, faster foils designed for freeride, wave riding or racing.

Why Buy a Complete Wing Foil Package?
Buying your equipment as a complete package is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to get started.
Rather than trying to match individual boards, foils and wings yourself, a package gives you equipment that’s been selected to work together, saving both time and money.
At Fluid Lines, we’ve carefully chosen complete packages that are ideal for beginners through to progressing riders.
